When the country achieved independence on 31 August 1957, it was known as Malaya. On 16 Sept 1963, Sabah and Sarawak officially became part of the nation, forming the country now known as Malaysia.
The momentous day become known as Malaysia Day and is a public holiday nationwide. Celebrations take place across the country and it various forms as Malaysians gather to remember how the West (Peninsular Malaysia) and East (Malaysian Borneo) become one.
